Women in Birmingham who are considering breast augmentation understandably have many questions about the procedure. Below, Dr. Beckenstein has provided answers to some of the most common questions he gets during breast enlargement consultations.
It's a common misconception that it's obvious when a woman has undergone breast enlargement surgery. In fact, many women choose this procedure to achieve an enhanced, feminine shape that is not overly large or has that "augmented, fake look." Placing implants beneath the chest muscle and carefully choosing the right implant size can contribute to a more feminine, but still very natural look. To see results attained by some of my actual patients, view our photo gallery online.
Breast augmentation incisions are most commonly placed under the breast crease (inframammary), around the areola (periareolar), or in the armpit (transaxillary). At your confidential consultation, Dr. Beckenstein will help you decide which incision is best for you by taking into consideration such factors as implant size, shape, and placement (above or below the chest muscle). He also considers aesthetics related to the location of the surgical scars.
Breast augmentation can improve the appearance of slightly sagging breasts by filling out the stretched skin. Women with more severely sagging breasts might better benefit from a breast lift, or a combination of breast augmentation and lift, when fuller breasts are desired. Dr. Beckenstein will perform a thorough physical examination during your consultation to help him recommend the most appropriate surgical plan for your body and cosmetic goals.
After 14 years of study, the FDA approved silicone gel implants in November 2006 for women who are at least 22 years old. This advanced generation of silicone breast implants gives Birmingham women an alternative to saline implants that looks and feels very natural.
While actual results depend on a variety of factors, many women are able to successfully breastfeed after breast augmentation surgery. If you plan to breastfeed, be sure to inform Dr. Beckenstein before your surgery so he can minimize any impact to the milk glands.
Breast implants are not designed to be "lifetime" medical devices, but they can last many, many years with proper care. It is immediately noticeable when a saline implant leaks, but the salt water solution is harmlessly absorbed by the body. The implant can be replaced through a simple surgical procedure. Because it is often not quickly apparent that a silicone implant has failed, an MRI or an ultrasound can be used to detect this.
