Another Successful BRA Day Celebration in Birmingham

Dr. Michael S. Beckenstein

2016 has had another successful BRA Day Celebration. BRA Day USA is an event to bring awareness of breast reconstruction. It stands for Breast Reconstruction Awareness. It is amazing that 40% of women, who are facing mastectomy do not know immediate breast reconstruction is an option. The have their mastectomy and walk around with that terrible deformity, when they could have had a nice reconstruction, making the look and feel whole again.  The event was hosted by Michael S. Beckenstein, M.D. a Birmingham plastic surgeon, specializes in Alabama breast reconstruction. He and his staff have held Bra Day for the past several years, in concert with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). ” Bra Day is to educate women that breast reconstruction is an option and available to them. They do not have to experience the look and feel of a mastectomy defect anymore. We worked with Senator Roger Bedford to get legislation, in Alabama, to assure this education. Since then the ASPS started Bra Day to further outreach”. states Dr. Beckenstein “We now have an established day, the third Wednesday of October, to stage an event. We make it a fun day to, not only provide education to the public and healthcare providers, but to use it as a celebration for our survivors”.

BRA Day, at Dr. Beckenstein’s event finds the Eleanor Kidd Rotunda awash in lavishly decorated pink There is an real pink fire truck that survivors signed, a photo booth to dress up and look silly, and breast cancer, survivor owned boutique to purchase pink ribbon related items. The highlight of the day is the bra decorating contest. ” This has become quite the competition as we now have corporations participating. Competing with ad agencies is tough! We have nice prizes and celebrity judges to make it more fun. This year we were honored to Have Rob And Hilary, from Magic 96.5 and J-P Dice, Chief meteorologist from WBRC Fox 6.” He adds. ” it was a tremendous success as over 200 attended, learned about breast reconstruction, celebrated survival, courage, and sisterhood!”
