Honest Birmingham Plastic Surgery Advertising

There are many plastic surgeons who tout themselves as cosmetic or plastic surgeons. However, none of them are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), nor members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). These board-certified plastic surgeons must adhere to stringent guidelines when it comes to advertising. The ASPS members here in Birmingham will show you honest plastic surgery advertising.

Birmingham plastic surgeon Michael S. Beckenstein, M.D. discussed this during a recent interview with a local magazine. He said, “We must adhere to strict guidelines and face disciplinary action if we fail to do so. ASPS members cannot state that we are better than anyone else, cannot use phrases as best, premiere, #1, or superior. We cannot state that we have performed the most or how many procedures we have done.” He adds, “Those posing as plastic or cosmetic surgeons will do this and get away with it as they do not belong to any boards or societies that regulate this.”

The public can tell the difference when they see advertising stating that a physician is #1. Dr. Beckenstein cites an example of this: “There is a place, here in Birmingham, that obtained a Neograft hair replacement system three or four years ago. They state they are #1 in Alabama and have performed over 3,000 procedures. If you do the math that would be 3 to 4 cases a day! No one is performing this many cases anywhere! They state they are #1 because of this. This is where the public needs to be savvy and sift through this garbage, so to speak. This type of advertising and misleading statements can lead people to the wrong places.”

Dr. Beckenstein cautions, “You must do your homework, look for board certifications, talk to real patients, don’t just believe numbers presented by advertisements, get proof! You wont regret it. Check the board certifications of your doctors and make sure they are certified in the procedure you are seeking, don’t be fooled !It is up to you to vet your surgeon.” Physicians that have training in hair replacement are plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and facial plastic surgeons. There are several others that have spent 10-20 years performing hair restoration and specialize in it.
