Breast Implants in Birmingham

Once you have decided that breast enlargement surgery is right for you, there are a few decisions you must make regarding breast implants. Birmingham plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Beckenstein will take the time to carefully review each of these options with you during your consultation appointment.

Implant Size

When it comes to breast implants in Birmingham, implant size is one of the most important considerations. Determining the "right" breast implant size is a highly personal matter that depends on your aesthetic goals. Do you feel that your breasts have always been too small? Do you want to return your breasts to the size they were before you had children or lost a lot of weight? Do you want to even out breast size because one is smaller than the other?

Dr. Beckenstein also considers your body type, lifestyle, and the amount of natural breast tissue you already have when arriving at a final implant size for your breast enlargement surgery.

Implant Material

There are two available options for breast implant fill material, saline or silicone gel. It's important to understand the differences between these materials when choosing the one for you.

Saline

Saline implants consist of a silicone outer shell that is filled with a medical-grade salt-water solution. Advantages include:

  • Small incisions. These implants are rolled up, inserted into the body, and filled after they are placed.
  • Customized results. Eventual breast size can be adjusted after it is placed by adding/removing saline solution.

Disadvantages of saline implants include rippling and a less natural feel, although placement under the chest muscle greatly reduces these drawbacks.

Silicone Gel

Silicone gel implants are made up of a silicone shell that is filled with a silicone gel that does not ripple like saline and feels a lot like natural breast tissue. This implant type has been available since 2006 for primary breast augmentation patients who are at least 22 years old. Silicone implants require a slightly larger incision because they come in fixed, pre-filled sizes.

Implant Profile

There are several available breast implant profiles that affect how far the breast projects from the chest wall. Available profiles range from "low profile" for women who desire more fullness and less projection to "high profile" for slender women who desire mostly projection. Dr. Beckenstein will discuss the profile options with you at your comprehensive consultation to help him give you the most satisfying results
