I am pleased to formally introduce a concept I have spent 10 years developing. My unique approach to breast cancer treatment not only includes all the services needed for compassionate, competent, state-of-the-art care but also enhances patients’ quality of life. Unlike the “comprehensive” breast centers at major universities, the Alabama Breast Cancer Cooperative offers a small-town, intimate approach to breast cancer treatment that is less intimidating than what my patients have deemed “the assault of the white coats,” which many have experienced at larger centers. We provide the essential care required to treat breast cancer while adding highly effective, nurturing support for the often-overlooked mind, body and spirit. Dr. Michael Beckenstein
Dr. Beckenstein has specialized in breast reconstruction for 2 decades, and he is board-certified in both plastic surgery and general surgery. His training has taken him to some of the best comprehensive breast centers in the country. In his own center, he has assimilated features from each of those he has visited while adding some of his own ideas. With his outstanding credentials and experience, Dr. Beckenstein provides care for breast cancer patients from a rare and innovative perspective, understanding that there is more to the process than simply removing the tumor and rebuilding the breast.
The identification of a suspicious mammogram or breast mass is the beginning of an incredibly stressful time. Expediting a diagnosis is imperative to helping alleviate this stress and getting treatment started quickly. Dr. Beckenstein has developed an unusually efficient system in which the time between initial contact with his office and obtaining a diagnosis is usually less than 72 hours.
If the diagnosis is cancer, the patient is seen immediately for a consultation, during which an oncologic surgeon and a reconstructive surgeon will both present treatment options. Dr. Beckenstein has developed longstanding partnerships with several oncologic surgeons who share his vision of a team approach to the treatment of breast cancer. These surgeons are all respected in their field and provide the level of compassionate care Dr. Beckenstein demands for his patients.
The excellence of these surgeons, combined with Dr. Beckenstein’s background and experience, provides the patient with an exceptionally comprehensive evaluation and surgical plan. This includes employing the latest methods of oncoplastic surgery and nipple-sparing mastectomy to ensure outstanding cancer treatment while achieving the best aesthetic results.
The center brings together well-respected, compassionate oncologists and radiation specialists to provide patients with every aspect of breast cancer care. All practitioners are familiar with each other’s techniques and care plans, which allows for well-coordinated, integrated care. Referrals are often made to assure favorable matching of personalities.
Dr. Beckenstein is a fellowship-trained, board-certified plastic surgeon whose extensive experience in breast enhancement, body contouring procedures, and reconstructive plastic surgery sets him apart.meet dr. Beckenstein
What sets this center apart from others is an understanding of the level of support breast cancer patients require during this time of tribulation. Their minds, bodies and spirits need to be nurtured, relaxed and rejuvenated. Through the years, Dr. Beckenstein has cultivated ways to accomplish this. One is a unique support system that matches new patients with current ones. The opportunity to share stories and provide emotional support can lower stress and build confidence while the patients often develop incredibly strong bonds.
Dr. Beckenstein has also retained the services of a counselor, who provides dedicated care for our patients. Through the years, our counselor has developed an excellent rapport with our breast cancer patients, allowing her to provide them with understanding and personalized therapy.
In addition, we partner with physical therapists who provide specialized services for our patients. These physical therapists have spent time in the operating room observing Dr. Beckenstein’s procedures, which has given them the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of anatomy and treatment protocols. The result is an amazingly successful system that patients rave about.
Dr. Beckenstein also has developed a relationship with a well-known spa, which is owned by a cancer survivor. She pampers Alabama Breast Cancer Cooperative patients and provides a relaxing diversion from the trials of chemotherapy.
Members of the clergy, some of whom have personal experience with breast cancer, are available to provide spiritual guidance.
The center also works with an outstanding lymphedema clinic, which provides expert care for this challenging side effect of cancer treatment. We also facilitate access to wigs, prostheses and other durable items. Nutritionists who are familiar with the special needs of breast cancer patients are available for consultation.
This concept has been evolving for many years and has proved highly successful. We welcome any patients with concerns about a breast mass or suspicious mammogram to seek a referral to our center for treatment and assistance in coping with this stressful situation.
We provide competent, compassionate care in a supportive and expeditious manner designed to treat every aspect of a woman’s life that is affected by breast cancer.Back to Top
