Liposuction in Birmingham, AL

Liposuction is one of the more popular options for people considering plastic surgery. Our Birmingham patients from Montgomery, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, and other Alabama communities choose liposuction to slim and shape their body contours, revealing a more attractive look and increasing comfort in clothing. A top choice for liposuction surgery, Dr. Michael S. Beckenstein performs the procedure on both men and women at select hospitals in and around our area. Cosmetic surgery procedures such as liposuction offer you the ability to improve your appearance when diet and exercise alone are not enough.

Liposuction Candidates

Candidates for this procedure are healthy individuals within the target weight range who have persistent areas of excess fatty tissue with good skin tone. Dr. Beckenstein is careful to point out to his Birmingham patients that liposuction is not a substitute for proper diet and adequate exercise. This is not a weight reduction procedure and is intended for patients within 15 to 20 pounds of their ideal body weight. When you visit for your consultation, you will receive a thorough education on this procedure as well as a diet and exercise plan to help you maintain your post-surgery results.

Liposuction can enhance most areas where stubborn fat builds up beneath the skin. Popular treatment areas include:

Your Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction (also known as suction-assisted lipectomy) removes excess fat deposits from various areas of the body, including the waist, thighs, back, abdomen, arms, and even underneath the chin. The procedure requires a small incision in the area to be treated, through which a small tube (called a cannula) is inserted under the skin to extract fat tissue. Dr. Beckenstein performs liposuction procedures under general or local anesthesia, depending on the amount of fat tissue being removed and the area of the body being improved.

Liposuction Recovery

Liposuction recovery is relatively short and straightforward. Important considerations include:

  • Compression garments: Postoperatively, you will be fitted with compression garments to cover and compress the treated areas. This limits fluid accumulation and provides gentle, balanced pressure, assuring a smooth final contour. You will wear this garment continuously for 2 to 4 weeks, except when showering.
  • Swelling: Treated areas will be swollen initially because of the tumescent fluid that makes the fat easier to remove. To minimize swelling as you heal, wear your compression garments and take easy walks as directed. The majority of the swelling resolves in 3 to 4 weeks.
  • Bruising: Temporary bruising is normal and typically resolves within about a month. The degree of bruising varies with the treated area, the amount of fat removed, and individual patient factors. We will give you instructions for controlling bruising, which may include applying cool compresses and not smoking.
  • Wound care: Liposuction incisions are tiny and often do not need stitches. We will provide you with specific post-op instructions to ensure incisions heal properly.
  • Pain management: Patients can typically manage discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers. We will give you a prescription for pain medication in case you need it.
  • Work: Most people can return to nonstrenuous work within a week.
  • Activity: Nonstrenuous activities can be resumed in about a week, depending on the areas treated. Wait about 3 weeks before resuming strenuous activities.
  • Final results: Expect to see the actual improvement in your body shape and appearance within 6 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is liposuction painful?

After liposuction, discomfort is typically minimal and controlled with over-the-counter medication. We will give you a mild narcotic prescription to take in case you need more potent pain medication.

Does liposuction remove fat permanently?

The fat cells removed during liposuction will not grow back, but the ones that remain can enlarge with weight gain. Results are long-lasting when patients maintain a healthy lifestyle and a consistent weight.

How much fat can be removed?

Dr. Beckenstein does not remove a significant amount of fat during liposuction as it is not a weight loss procedure. He can remove fat from where it matters most, which is not always possible with diet and exercise.

Is liposuction better than tummy tuck surgery?

Liposuction is better than a tummy tuck for removing isolated areas of fat. A tummy tuck is better for tightening lax skin and repairing stretched abdominal muscles. Learn more in this blog post.

Does liposuction leave loose skin?

Liposuction does not tighten the skin, so results are best when patients have good skin elasticity or combine liposuction with a skin tightening procedure such as a tummy tuck.
