One of the more popular options for people considering plastic surgery is liposuction. Our Birmingham patients from Montgomery, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, and other Alabama communities choose liposuction to slim and shape their body contours, revealing a more attractive look and increasing comfort in clothing. Dr. Michael S. Beckenstein performs liposuction on both men and women at select hospitals in and around our area. Cosmetic surgery procedures such as liposuction offer you the ability to improve your appearance when diet and exercise alone are not enough.
Candidates for this procedure are healthy individuals within the target weight range who have persistent areas of excess fatty tissue with good skin tone. Dr. Beckenstein is careful to point out to his Birmingham patients that liposuction is not a substitute for proper diet and adequate exercise. This is not a weight reduction procedure and is intended for patients within 15 to 20 pounds of their ideal body weight. When you visit for your consultation, you will receive a thorough education on this procedure as well as a diet and exercise plan to help you maintain your post-surgery results.
Liposuction (also known as suction-assisted lipectomy) removes excess fat deposits from various areas of the body, including the waist, thighs, back, abdomen, arms, and even underneath the chin. The procedure requires a small incision in the area to be treated, through which a small tube (called a cannula) is inserted, under the skin, to extract fat tissue. Dr. Beckenstein performs liposuction procedures under general or local anesthesia, depending on the amount of fat tissue being removed and the area of the body being improved. Post-operatively, you will be fitted with compression garments to protect the area and help shape your final result. Discomfort is minimal and is usually controlled with over the counter medication; a mild narcotic prescription will be given to you in case you need more potent pain medication. Recovery time is relatively short and most patients return to work within a week of their procedure. The majority of the swelling resolves in 3 to 4 weeks and within 6 weeks you will be able to see the actual improvement in your body shape and appearance.
