Just Because It is an Easy Procedure Doesn’t Mean it is Easy to Perform!

Dr. Michael S. Beckenstein

Patients are consumers and must be wary when choosing a surgeon to perform ANY procedure on them. This is especially true with cosmetic or aesthetic surgeries. With the current economic trends in medicine, physicians are seeking ways to increase their revenue. Many are stepping over into the cosmetic realm and offering procedures they can perform in their offices that are NOT under control of the hospital credentialing process. This is true for Alabama cosmetic surgery as the state is lax on regulating offices and store front operations.

Lasers, liposuction, injectable facial fillers, and hair replacement are areas where Birmingham cosmetic surgery is seeing more being offered by physicians who possess no training in the basics foundations of plastic surgery. These procedures are touted to be easy, outpatient, office based to the patient. What the patient does not know is that they are not usually easy to perform! It may seem that the doctor just has to stick a small needle into your cheek and inject a filler to make you look more youthful. What the patient does not know if the doctor needs to be trained in the facial anatomy, blood and nerve supply. They need to be familiar with the tissues, have operated on them and seen them in order to get a true “feel” and know precisely where to inject those agents. Poor results and serious complications, including blindness can result! The same is true for liposuction, just because there are tiny incisions and it can be performed in an office does not make it easy. In fact, large amounts of local anesthetic can be injected and cause serious life threatening complications. Their are so many nuances to liposuction that inexperienced and untrained physicians are obtaining poor results, that often require challenging procedures to attempt correction! My practice sees at least 8 major cases of poorly performed liposuction procedures performed by non trained doctors.

The same is true for hair transplant Alabama has a few well trained and experienced hair replacement physicians and a few that possess no core training in this field. Physicians that offer hair replacement in Birmingham must have a knowledge of hair physiology, scalp anatomy, and  blood supply. They should have experience with surgery of the scalp, know the orientation and angles of the hair follicles. The worst result one can see is when the transplanted hair is placed incorrectly.

Not only is core training through residencies essential, EXPERIENCE, JUDGEMENT, and an AESTHETIC “EYE”  are essential to obtain good results with these seemingly “easy” procedures.  IT IS UP TO YOU, THE PATIENT, THE CONSUMER TO SEEK OUT WELL TRAINED, EXPERIENCED PHYSICIANS TO PERFORM THESE PROCEDURES ON YOU! STATE BOARDS WILL NOT PROTECT YOU! CONDUCT RESEARCH THOROUGHLY ON THESE PHSICIANS, ASK YOUR OTHER DOCOTRS FOR REFERRALS ASK YOUR FRIENDS WHO HAVE HAD SIMILAR PROCEDURES WITH GOOD RESULTS WHO THEY WENT TO.

My Cosmetic surgery Birmingham practice Michael S. Beckenstein, M.D. and my Birmingham hair transplant practice; Birmingham Neograft are great examples of a competent safe practice to seek services such as injectable fillers, liposuction, and hair replacement. I am residency trained and board certified in plastic surgery. I am a member in good standing with the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), The International Society for Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), the American Board of Surgery (94-04), and the American Board of Plastic Surgery.  I am also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the International College of Surgeons. These credentials ensure that I met the strict criteria of each college and society. I completed residencies in general and plastic surgery and passed all their board examinations. The societies accepted me as I meet their practice criteria including ethical behavior, competent practice, case evaluation (good results), and safety requirement. I have also completed the MOC recertification process to assure continued upkeep of my credentials. I have over 20 years experience with plastic aesthetic, and cosmetic surgery. I am core trained in these fields and am the most experienced in Neograft hair replacement in Alabama. The staff that I have assembled has worked with me for years and some have cared for over 2000 patients with me. My hair restoration team has experience with thousands of procedures.

Using my Alabama  plastic surgery practice and my Birmingham hair restoration practice as examples, you can see what to look for when choosing a physician to perform these “easy” procedures on you. There is nothing easy about a poor result and correction of them is never easy!!!!!
