Plastic surgery has become increasingly popular in recent years, but with its rise in popularity comes a surge of misconceptions. As a board-certified plastic surgeon, I believe it’s important that my patients make informed decisions based on facts.
That’s why I authored a similar blog post recently about the myths surrounding mommy makeover surgery. Myths about cosmetic plastic surgery persist, in part, because of social media and articles published by less-than-reputable sources. So, let’s separate fact from fiction.
Myth 1: You’ll Look Like You’ve Had “Work” Done
One of the most prevalent myths is that plastic surgery invariably results in an unnatural appearance. This misconception stems from a handful of extreme cases that have dominated media coverage. (Who hasn’t seen photos of the “cat woman?”) The truth is that skilled plastic surgeons create natural-looking results that enhance a patient’s features without appearing overdone.
Myth 2: Plastic Surgery Is Only for Cosmetic Purposes
Plastic surgery includes much more than just cosmetic procedures. Reconstructive plastic surgery, such as repairing cleft palates, revising burn scars, and post-mastectomy breast reconstruction are all performed using plastic surgery.
Myth 3: It’s Only for Women
While women make up the majority of plastic surgery patients, the number of men opting for these procedures is on the rise. The number of men undergoing plastic surgery increased by 8% from 2022 to 2023. That continues a trend as more and more men embrace plastic surgery to enhance their appearance and boost their confidence with procedures such as liposuction, rhinoplasty, and facial rejuvenation.
Myth 4: Only the Wealthy Can Afford Plastic Surgery
Contrary to popular belief, plastic surgery isn’t reserved for the rich and famous. Many cosmetic procedures are much more affordable than you might think. And most plastic surgery practices partner with healthcare financing companies that offer attractive payment terms for qualified patients. This enables women and men from virtually all walks of life to address concerns about their appearance through plastic surgery.
Myth 5: Breast Implants Are Unsafe
The truth is that breast implants have been extensively studied—and continue to be the subject of clinical research. In fact, they are one of the most studied medical implants in use. They are approved by the FDA, and hundreds of thousands of women every year elect to have breast augmentation with implants.
Myth 6: Liposuction Is Weight Loss Surgery
Liposuction is often misunderstood as an easy way to lose weight. It’s actually a body contouring procedure designed to remove stubborn fat deposits that resist diet and exercise. It’s most effective for patients who are already at or near their ideal weight but struggle with trouble spots where fat tends to accumulate.
Myth 7: Plastic Surgery Leaves Unsightly Scars
Whenever a surgeon makes an incision, the healing process results in a scar. Skilled plastic surgeons, however, use techniques to minimize and conceal scars. They often place incisions in natural skin folds or less visible areas. Additionally, proper post-operative care can significantly reduce the appearance of scars over time.
Myth 8: A Cosmetic Surgeon Is the Same as a Plastic Surgeon
Although often used interchangeably, plastic surgeons and cosmetic surgeons complete different levels of training. A plastic surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and undergoes extensive training in both plastic and cosmetic surgery, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of facial and body aesthetics as well as reconstructive techniques. Medical doctors can refer to themselves as cosmetic surgeons without having the specialized training of a plastic surgeon.
Myth 9: Nonsurgical Procedures Can Yield the Same Results as Surgical Ones
Nonsurgical procedures, such as a “liquid facelift,” have surged in popularity over the past few years. That’s primarily due to their reduced recovery times and less invasive nature. While these treatments are indeed effective in addressing certain aesthetic concerns, there is a widespread myth that they can replicate the same results as their surgical counterparts. To put it simply, this isn’t the case. It’s important to have realistic expectations about what can be accomplished with nonsurgical treatments.
Myth 10: Plastic Surgery Results Last Forever
Plastic surgery provides long-lasting improvements, but it doesn’t stop the natural aging process. The longevity of results varies depending on the procedure and individual factors such as lifestyle, genetics, and skincare habits. Some procedures may require touch-ups or revisions over time to maintain optimal results.
